Knock Knock

Who’s there?

Begin

Begin who?

Beginner Bonita

Hi Bonita, how can I help you?

I want to learn dance

then who is stopping you?

my thighs

soft enough to be called pillows

my arms

fluffier than fluffy pancakes

my subcutaneous fat around the neck

that google has no cure for

my hips

that no pair of jeans can contain

But

I am still here for

Mumma said only you can teach me –

“The fat dance instructor who lives next door”

beginner

I smiled and smelled

reeks of nostalgia

in no time we began

to begin

learning how

D A N C E

was a rhythm

of one’s soul

accepting all

shapes and sizes

singing

“All of me, loves all of you”

we danced like we were

in a Ganpati Visarjan

screaming in liberation –

“Ganpati Bappa Morya”,

like in weddings, birthdays, breakups,

harvest seasons, annual days,

hospitals, flash mobs,

picnic buses,

the roller coaster rushes,

celebrations and emotions of

love playing Frank Sinatra’s

“Strangers in the Night”

letting go of hurt, shame,

bullies and betrayals

feeling

associating

expressing

connecting

the body, the mind, the soul,

moving, listening and

D A N C I N G

“Break time, go get some water”

the towel couldn’t wipe off my sunshine glow

my thighs, arms, double chin, hips and

MY body felt “mine”

belonged and owned

the fingers dancing around the shoe laces

untied

and the faint wrinkles on my forehead

elevating, one step at a time

my smile wider than my stretches

“Am I ready to learn the MJ style?”

That day,

when the stage carried my heavy feet

no one complained

thousands of knees unbent

and palms reunited

creating

a reverberating sound of

a battle won, a life saved.

That day,

A DANCER WAS BORN.

hugging the fat instructor

tight

warm sparkly eyes

left her a note –

We are all beginners in

somebody else’s perception of dance

Learning different versions help us grow

We are dancers before we are born

We begin to move in the womb

And we are moved to our tombs

Movement is all there is,

Dance is the breath and

He who owns his unique breath

Becomes a style everyone wants to

Master, Emulate and Evolve

But

Darling you

Own your breath

Dance your dance!
