The food on my table had gone cold for I was too lazy to get myself off of my bean bag and walk the ‘long’ distance from my sloppy throne to that table of opportunity. Isn’t that the gap usually? Between our procrastination and action – a cold meal on the table. A few episodes, rather an entire season later, I finally got up. I had been holding my pee in for way too long now. So, turns out that it took for an emergency such as the nature’s call to get me closer to a plate of food that was supposed to nourish me. Deadlines –a concept, originally created to keep an individual or a group of individuals motivated and time-bound, is in fact a carrot that hangs in front of me waiting to be eaten. But I don’t eat it until that nature’s call knocks, rather, bangs on my door repeatedly. Why does this happen to so many of us? What is the root cause? Meh, who cares. I’d rather finish another season of my favourite series. Everyone who relates to me, raise your hand. And to the heroes who don’t, you all inspire me.
This pattern kept repeating itself and became my very existence until one day, I realised something. I will share that life-changing experience with you all, some day, when I find the right words. Until then, just hear me out. Really listen! Imagine your favourite character from a book, a series or a movie has come to life and is talking to you. But before that, let me drop a truth bomb right away – there is no right time, there never will be. Your only next best option is ‘now’. Like this article I am finally writing. This was supposed to be written seven months ago. But again, it’s never too late. When you don’t know where or how to begin, just begin.
So, what is the work-in-progress involved to be able to adapt yourself to taking actions ‘now’ instead of putting yourself in a situation where you can’t hold your pee in any longer? Simple, just pee at regular intervals. Some of us geniuses stop/reduce drinking water instead, but you and I both know that option isn’t sustainable. Instead, it creates a million other problems. While this analogy of mine is somewhat gross (maybe) to some of you; if you really, deeply understand it – it’s the best way to understand the very foundation of procrastination and taking actions.
(Read the next paragraph in the voice of your favourite character, basically any person or even object, you’d really listen to. Common, switch characters. Sounds silly? Do it!)
It will take time to allow yourself to have those warm, love-wrapped meals that wait for you at the table. Some days, you may take longer to just spot them and some days you won’t even know that they are for you. Some days you will have to work really hard to get them. Another truth bomb – on some days you will just want a cold meal and that is okay. An ideal situation to be in – is to balance it all out, which is a separate journey in itself. The fuel to these journeys, you ask? Loads of self-love, self-nourishment and self-awareness. The understanding of self is the only way to take actions ‘now’. It’s a scary process but it’s also very exciting. You explore parts of yourself you didn’t know existed. You network with the right people in the most unexpected ways. You sleep sounder and sweeter. You feel lighter. You optimise your energies and you make more time for feeding your soul. You shine! Sounds dreamy isn’t it? We can all live this dream by doing just one simple thing – saying YES! Say yes to things and see the magic unfold. Let the universe take you to places instead of you trying to measure and analyse every single step at all times, so much that you end up not taking that step at all! Another truth bomb – even when you victoriously manage to get to this other side you will sometimes keep oscillating back and forth. The trick is to take those baby steps forward (sometimes even re-take them), discard the ‘expectations’ hat and aim at achieving consistency so it becomes a way of life. Vacations are allowed so always remember to cut yourself some slack. The process shall be as unique as you and if you respect that; one day this way of living will become as simple and as routine as brushing your teeth. And that my friends, is the real deal.
Was I born with this knowledge? No. Am I proud of the growth I have had and of this perennial journey I am on where I can learn, reflect and share these realisations with myself and you all? Yes. These are all thoughts from my big bucket of learnings penned in my diaries that contain both – the mistakes and the shines. Are these all mine? No. These learnings come from people, from workshops I enrol myself into, from books, from life, from this one abundant canvas of learning – the universe. One wise person once told me that nothing is really ours. So why spend ourselves wanting to claim it? All we can do is share. Sharing gives us power. It pulls us out of a competitive space and puts us in a creative space. The more one gives, the more one has. The more one has, the more one can give. It’s the ideal circle the human race must be a part of.
So, the next time you see food on the table, go grab it. It’s yours! Keep hydrating and pee at regular intervals. Literally and metaphorically. Glow with the flow my folks! A very Happy New Year to you all.
